A dull economics class of bored 1980s teenagers, one asleep on his desk, while a girl in a pink cardigan turns to explain and the teacher waits with his roll book.

My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with a girl who saw Ferris pass-out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is a perfect piece of teenage gossip: five links of 'friend of a friend' stacked to make a rumour sound solid, and the longer the chain gets the less it can be true. Simone delivers it with total earnest confidence, while Ferris is out enjoying his day. Fans quote it for any piece of third-hand hearsay.

In Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986), Ferris has faked being ill to take a day off in Chicago, and school goes on without him. In his economics class the teacher, played by Ben Stein, calls the roll in his famous drone and reaches Ferris's name, which gets no answer. Simone, a classmate, speaks up with the rumour chain of friends of friends that has Ferris collapsing at a 31 Flavors ice cream shop the night before. The teacher thanks her and moves on.
