There are two tragedies in life. One is not to get your heart's desire. The other is to get it.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The two tragedies place disappointment and fulfilment beside each other as possible sources of suffering. Getting what one wants is denied its usual role as the happy ending. The paradox makes desire itself uncertain ground, leaving open why satisfaction might prove as painful as refusal.
