Falcon Punch!

— Super Smash Bros. · 1999

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Falcon Punch means putting everything into one huge, telegraphed blow, and winning with it anyway. Part of the joke is that the move is slow, so landing it feels like pulling off a miracle; the other part is the voice and the pause. Fans shout it for real-life punches, victories and dramatic one-shot gestures, and it shows up well outside Smash as shorthand for over-the-top confidence.

Spoilers for Super Smash Bros.Show the scene

Falcon Punch is Captain Falcon's Neutral Special in Super Smash Bros. (Nintendo 64, 1999) and every Smash game since. He draws his arm back, shouts the first half of the name, then steps forward and punches with a fist wrapped in a falcon-shaped flame. It is slow and easy to dodge but hits very hard. The move was invented for Smash: Falcon had almost never fought in his own F-Zero games, so Smash gave him a moveset of his own, and the name stuck as his signature.
