Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
It is a challenge delivered like a pose: a man in a racing helmet daring you to prove yourself, with all the swagger and none of the explanation. Smash players still say it before a match, and the character who barely speaks in his own franchise became a punchline and a hero because of it. Nintendo even brought the line back for Mario Kart 8.

This is Captain Falcon's taunt in Super Smash Bros. (Nintendo 64, 1999): he turns, pushes a fist to his hip, touches his forehead and snaps out a salute while barking the line. It belongs to the crossover rather than to F-Zero: the English calls were performed by the Japanese voice actor Ryo Horikawa, while Falcon's own racing games had never made him a talker. His outfit and the Blue Falcon he leaps out of when he enters a match come from F-Zero X, and Melee reused the taunt in 2001.
