Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It tells fans in four words that the people coming to rescue them are not who they claim to be, and it is the last thing Charlie does. The line gave the finale its sting and set up the freighter plot of season 4. It is also a favourite example of Lost ending an episode on a cryptic message.

Spoilers for LostShow the scene

In "Through the Looking Glass" (the third-season finale, first aired 23 May 2007), Charlie Pace swims down to the flooded Looking Glass station, the Others' underwater jamming post, to switch off the signal that blocks rescue. He plays "Good Vibrations" on the control pad to kill the jamming, and talks with Desmond and Penny Widmore over the radio. When Charlie mentions the freighter and Naomi, Penny says she has no boat there. After Mikhail's grenade floods the room, Charlie, trapped and drowning, writes his last warning on his palm and presses it to the porthole glass for Desmond to read.
