Your future hasn't been written yet. No one's has. Your future is whatever you make it. So make it a good one.

Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
After three films about changing the past, the answer is that nothing is fixed. Doc turns a blank piece of paper into the trilogy's moral and says it to two teenagers, so it lands as a send-off, not a lecture. Fans use it on graduation cards and farewell posts, and it fits the end of the series that told them to make their own ending.

Spoilers for Back to the Future Part IIIShow the scene
Back to the Future Part III (1990). In the closing scene, back in Hill Valley in 1985, Marty and Jennifer are astonished when the Brown family turns up. Jennifer holds the note she brought back from the future, which has become blank, and asks what that means. Doc says of course it is erased and gives this answer to both of them. Doc closes the door and Marty asks if he is heading back to the future, and Doc says he has already been there.
