Edna Mode

I never look back, darling. It distracts from the now.

— The Incredibles · 2004

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Edna dismisses her own past masterpiece without a flicker of sentiment: only the next design matters. The line is vain and funny, but it is also the film's quiet counterpoint to Bob, who cannot stop looking back at his glory days. It lives on as a motto for creatives and as a stock reply to anyone dwelling on the past.

Spoilers for The IncrediblesShow the scene

In Pixar's The Incredibles (2004, written and directed by Brad Bird), retired hero Bob Parr takes his torn old supersuit to Edna Mode, the designer of the Supers' costumes. She calls it a hobo suit, throws it in the bin and says she cannot allow it. Bob takes it back out and reminds her that she designed it. Edna replies that she never looks back, because it distracts from the now. She tells him he needs a new suit, claims she is far too busy, and then agrees to make one. Bird voices Edna himself, after other actresses tried the part and could not match the accent he had in mind.
