Foster Addison

My face is tired.

— Mass Effect: Andromeda · 2017

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Said as a weary apology, the line was heard by players as an unintended confession about the animation: a face that visibly could not keep up with the dialogue. It turned into the shorthand for Andromeda's launch, a game whose other qualities were drowned out in March 2017 by wide, unblinking stares. Fans still use it as a joke excuse for any stiff expression or awkward moment.

The line belongs to Foster Addison, the Andromeda Initiative's Director of Colonial Affairs on the Nexus, not to Sara Ryder. In a dialogue with the Pathfinder, Addison snaps and then apologises for her short temper by saying her face is tired of dealing with everything. The scene was clipped by YouTuber consmonauta on 15 March 2017, days after the EA Access trial opened, and posted to Twitter the next day beside other badly animated moments. It became the emblem of the game's launch facial animation troubles, and patch 1.05 later reworked Addison's eyes and makeup.
