Hannibal Smith

I love it when a plan comes together.

— The A-Team ‧ 1983

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the A-Team promise: the plan sounds mad, the montage is mad, and in the end it works exactly as Hannibal meant. Fans repeat it to cheer any messy scheme that finally lands, and it sits on T-shirts as shorthand for improvised teamwork. It is the cheerful flip side of the crazy-plan comedy at the heart of the show.

Spoilers for The A-TeamShow the scene

The A-Team (NBC, from the Super Bowl XVII lead-out on January 30, 1983) follows four former special-forces soldiers turned soldiers of fortune, led by Colonel John "Hannibal" Smith. Hannibal's unorthodox plans always get the team through, and "I love it when a plan comes together!" is his catchphrase when a scheme works. It recurs through the series as the closing note of a job well done, and it spread onto T-shirts and merchandise. At least once the line is echoed by B.A. Baracus, and it has outlived the series as the team's best-known line.
