Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Iroh is better at metaphor than answers, and this is his best: no promise that things will work out, only that the dark passage ends if you keep walking. Fans quote it to friends in rough patches, and it sits on mugs and wall art. It also points ahead, since Iroh has just given the comfort that Aang and Zuko will both need within minutes.

Spoilers for Avatar: The Last AirbenderShow the scene

In "The Crossroads of Destiny", the Book Two finale (2006), Aang and Iroh descend through a tunnel into the Crystal Catacombs beneath Ba Sing Se, hunting for Katara and Zuko while Azula's coup unfolds above. Aang, bending the rock out of the way and Iroh lighting the dark with a small flame, admits he turned down the guru's path to the Avatar State because it meant letting go of Katara. He asks what happens if he is not strong enough. Iroh says he doesn't know, but compares life to this dark tunnel.
