If we can't live together, we're going to die alone.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is Jack's thesis as leader: on an island with no rescue, cooperation is the only survival plan. The phrase became the show's most repeated motto, reused as the title of the season 2 finale and thrown back at Jack in later seasons. Fans use it for any group facing a crisis.

Spoilers for LostShow the scene

In "White Rabbit" (season 1, episode 5, first aired 20 October 2004, written by Christian Taylor), the survivors' water supply is running low. Boone, trying to take responsibility for rationing, has stolen the water, and a fight breaks out on the beach. Jack, who has just found the caves with fresh water in the jungle, returns and interrupts with a speech. He reminds them that a week earlier they were strangers, and tells them they will have to find a way to work together.
