We have to go back, Kate! We have to go back!

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Jack, the man who spent three seasons trying to get everyone off the Island, now begs to return, and the line turns the show's whole direction around in one shout. For Lost fans it is the moment the series reset the rules, and it was shorthand for the next season's question, how and why they go back. It is also a popular joke line about wanting to return to any obsession.

Spoilers for LostShow the scene

The closing minutes of "Through the Looking Glass", the two-hour Season 3 finale of Lost (ABC, 23 May 2007), flip the show's grammar. What looks like a flashback to Jack Shephard's life before the crash turns out to be a flash-forward after rescue. A bearded, pill-taking Jack has been flying on Oceanic Airlines every Friday, hoping the plane will crash back onto the Island. He summons Kate to an airport and confesses that they were never meant to leave. She drives off, and he screams the line after her as a plane takes off overhead.
