Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

A hero who needs no glasses for the dark, because his eyes are machines, answers with a straight face and a joke the game never underlines. It sums up Deus Ex's cool: a cyberpunk world where the body is hardware. Fans quote it whenever someone wears shades indoors, and it became shorthand for the game's dry, conspiratorial humour.

Spoilers for Deus ExShow the scene

In the first mission, once the player returns from Liberty Island to UNATCO headquarters, the anti-terrorist agency JC Denton has just joined, optional conversations with staff open up. One is with Anna Navarre, the heavily augmented agent who becomes his field partner. She is sceptical of the rookie and asks whether he really plans to wear his sunglasses during a night operation. Denton's deadpan answer is the line. It is an optional exchange, easy to miss.
