Jigsaw

I want to play a game.

— Saw ‧ 2004

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is a childlike invitation that is also a death sentence, and the mild phrasing is why it unsettles. The line announced a franchise whose every film turns a moral test into a trap, and it became the shorthand for the whole series. Fans use it as a joke for any ominous proposal, from board games to meetings.

Spoilers for SawShow the scene

In James Wan's Saw (2004), written by Leigh Whannell, the serial killer Jigsaw, played by Tobin Bell, speaks to his victims through recorded messages. The line opens the videotape from Amanda's game, the one trap whose victim survived. The voice greets Amanda by name, says it wants to play a game, and then explains the reverse bear trap clamped on her head, whose only key is inside a dead man in her cell. The tape is part of the film's backstory: detectives Tapp and Sing later use it to find Jigsaw's warehouse. The tapes in the bathroom that Adam and Dr. Gordon play open with different words. Jigsaw's puppet Billy says it in the sequels.
