Sometimes dead is better.
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
It is the novel's argument in four words. Jud has seen what comes back from the burial ground, and he says it quietly, like someone who knows. The line is the book's warning against refusing loss, and it echoes through the film adaptations. People quote it half as a joke and half as a shudder about grief.

Jud Crandall is the elderly neighbour in Ludlow, Maine, who becomes a surrogate father to Louis Creed. He leads Louis past the family pet cemetery to a burial ground beyond, and Ellie's cat, Church, comes back changed after being buried there. Months later Louis's two-year-old son Gage is killed on the same highway, and Louis begins to consider using the burial ground again. Jud tries to talk him out of it with the story of Timmy Baterman, the last person brought back that way. Wikiquote files the remark under Jud's explanation to Louis, as a reason for having shown him the place.
