Mario

Thank you so much for to playing my game!

— Super Mario 64  ·  1996

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The wobble in the sentence is what fans love: the Italian plumber is thanking the real player, not Peach. Breaking the fourth wall with a direct thank-you made the ending feel personal, and the 'for to' slip has been imitated ever since. The line is often misremembered as Peach's, because the cake and her letter surround it.

The words close Super Mario 64 (1996). After the player rescues Peach and the credits roll, Mario himself speaks to the player. Super Mario Wiki transcribes the line as 'Thank you so much for-to playing my game!', and lists it under Mario, not Peach. The game's final scene is a two-layer cake decorated with the words 'Thank you' and figures of Mario and Peach, and it stays on screen until the console is reset.
