Master Willem, an old blindfolded scholar in a hooded robe, sits in a rocking chair on a moonlit veranda by a misty lake as a hunter in a tricorn hat approaches from the shadows, in gothic etching style.

Master Willem

Fear the old blood.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Said by the man who found the secret and refused to use it, the line is the game's thesis in four words: the cure and the curse are the same fluid. It lands harder on a player who has spent hours refilling health from blood vials. As a tagline it invites dread rather than warns against it, and it set the tone for FromSoftware's most cosmic-horror world.

In Bloodborne (FromSoftware, 2015), "Fear the old blood" is the mantra of Master Willem, provost of the Byrgenwerth scholars. Beneath Yharnam the scholars found the Great Ones and the old blood, a substance that seemed able to heal any illness and to evolve mankind. Willem feared what it meant; Laurence, the future First Vicar, believed in it. The Healing Church grew out of that second view and spread blood ministration through the city, and a plague that turns people into beasts followed.
