Another settlement needs your help.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Preston's earnestness is the point: he is a man who has lost almost everyone and cannot stop asking one more thing of the player. Because the Minutemen jobs repeat without end, the line became the game's running joke, shorthand for a tireless rescue request, and "General" and "another settlement" are the two things fans do their Preston impressions with.

Spoilers for Fallout 4Show the scene

Preston Garvey is the last Minuteman, met in Concord early in Fallout 4 (Bethesda, released 10 November 2015), voiced by Jon Gentry. After the Sole Survivor helps him in When Freedom Calls and brings his refugees to Sanctuary Hills, he becomes a companion and the Minutemen's quest-giver. Once the main Minutemen quests are not active, he hands out up to three radiant quests each time you talk to him, and his intros for them vary: the game files include "I've heard of another settlement that's in trouble" and "Another settlement has sent word that they need our help", each followed by directions and a promise that the Minutemen will be there. The shortened form stocked here is how players quote that endless supply of rescue jobs.
