Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is Ren's whole worldview in three syllables: contempt, theatrical disgust and the fond, furious bond of two terrible roommates. The stretched, spitting delivery made it endlessly imitable, and it became the way a generation of cartoon fans calls a friend a fool. The rolled vowels also give it a built-in comic rhythm that a plain 'you idiot' never had.

Spoilers for The Ren & Stimpy ShowShow the scene

Ren Hoek's signature put-down on The Ren & Stimpy Show, the Nickelodeon cartoon created by John Kricfalusi that premiered in 1991. Ren, a scrawny, emotionally unstable asthma-hound Chihuahua, aims it at his dim-witted Manx cat housemate Stimpy whenever Stimpy's stupidity pushes him over the edge, usually before the slap, the shriek or the scheme goes wrong. It recurs in episode after episode rather than coming from one scene. Ren was voiced first by Kricfalusi himself and later by Billy West, and the catchphrase's stretched, mock-genteel vowels are the character's trademark.
