Would you like a jelly baby?
— Doctor Who · 1963
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
A bag of jelly babies is a disarming weapon: the Doctor can defuse a tense moment by asking whether you would like one, which signals curiosity and eccentricity over menace. The offer became so tied to Tom Baker's Doctor that the sweet is shorthand for the era.

Jelly babies, an English sweet, were the Fourth Doctor's trademark. The Tardis wiki records him offering them to Sarah Jane Smith and Harry Sullivan in "Robot" (1974-75), his first story, before taking them off on their adventures. He was not the first Doctor to carry them: the wiki gives the Second Doctor in "The Dominators" (1968) as the first appearance, and the Third Doctor's pockets held some too. But the Fourth Doctor made the offer his ice-breaker, a bag produced mid-crisis, as aboard Space Station Nerva in "The Ark in Space".
