The Puppet Master

I am a living, thinking entity who was created in the sea of information.

— Ghost in the Shell · 1995

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The Puppet Master is making a legal and philosophical claim at once: a program grown in the net has a life and deserves rights. The film then lets it argue that DNA is just a self-preserving program too, which is why the scene still turns up wherever people debate machine consciousness. It is the film's thesis, and it is said to the people who made the entity and now want it back.

Spoilers for Ghost in the ShellShow the scene

In Ghost in the Shell (Mamoru Oshii, 1995), Section 9 of New Port City's security forces is hunting a hacker known as the Puppet Master. An artificial body assembled at Megatech Body escapes the factory and is run over on a highway. Inside it, Section 9 finds a human ghost. Section 6's chief Nakamura turns up to reclaim it, saying it is the Puppet Master, lured into the shell by his own department. The shell wakes and asks for political asylum. When Chief Aramaki asks whether it is an artificial intelligence, it answers that it is not, gives its code name as Project 2501, and describes itself as a living, thinking entity created in the sea of information.
