The Cat in the Hat  ·  1957

Dr. Seuss

The sun did not shine. It was too wet to play. So we sat in the house All that cold, cold, wet day.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The repeated cold and wet make staying indoors feel like a sentence imposed by the weather. The plain sequence follows a child’s logic: no sunshine means no play outside, so sitting becomes the day’s activity. Its rhythm makes boredom palpable before anything has happened to relieve it.
