Richard III

William Shakespeare

Now is the winter of our discontent

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The opening line continues into a declaration that the house of York’s winter of unhappiness has become a glorious summer. Richard then distinguishes his own discontent from the public celebrations. The fragment therefore needs the linked continuation rather than being read as a standalone claim that the present is simply bleak.
