A little wooden footbridge crosses a stream in a sunlit English wood, a honey pot on the rail and a red balloon caught in a branch.

Sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in your heart.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Pooh's real talent in Milne's stories is a gentle, literal-minded wisdom, and this line borrows it: a Very Small Animal, a small gesture or a tiny friend can be the thing you love most. It is quoted at weddings, new babies and sympathy cards, usually as the Pooh quote nobody can source. As a rule of thumb, treat it as Pooh-flavoured sentiment rather than something Pooh said.

This is a greeting-card line rather than a scene from any story. It is credited to Pooh on cards, prints and gift books, but it does not appear among the Pooh and Milne entries on Wikiquote, and it is not a recorded line from A. A. Milne's books. Pooh has been on the page since Milne's 1926 book, and Disney licensed film and other rights to the stories from Milne's estate and Stephen Slesinger, Inc. in 1961. Wording like this belongs to that later, softer, merchandising-era Pooh, who speaks in gentle one-liners about friendship and love.
