Phoenix Wright, in a blue suit with spiky black hair, slams the desk and points across a wood-panelled courtroom at a prosecutor in a maroon suit and cravat, the judge watching from the bench.

Objection!

— Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney ‧ 2001

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Court dramas are slow, so this is the game's version of a power-up: the pause, the shout, the pointing finger and the music swell. It gives legal procedure the energy of a fighting game, and it is why people yell it in meetings, group chats and classrooms. One word that signals a reversal and invites everyone to disagree loudly.

Spoilers for Phoenix Wright: Ace AttorneyShow the scene

The Objection! speech bubble is the signature of the Ace Attorney series. In Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (Gyakuten Saiban in Japan, released on Game Boy Advance in 2001), the player cross-examines witnesses and, when a line of testimony conflicts with evidence in the court record, interrupts with Objection! and a finger-point. The series uses it freely, to point out a flaw in an opponent's argument or a witness's testimony, and every game so far has ended with the protagonist shouting it before the credits.
