Phone Guy

Hello? Hello, hello?

— Five Nights at Freddy's · 2014

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is a stammering, awkward hello from a voice that sounds as if it knows more than it says, and that is exactly how the game teaches you to be afraid. The call is both manual and warning, and its cheerful reassurance that everything is fine becomes the template for the series' tone. Fans quote it as the game's catchphrase, as a ringtone and as the opener of countless parody phone calls.

Spoilers for Five Nights at Freddy'sShow the scene

These are the first words of Five Nights at Freddy's (2014). On Night 1, as the clock starts at midnight in Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, the office phone rings and a recorded message begins: a hesitant voice asks if anyone is there, says he wants to help the new night guard get settled, and admits he worked in that office before. The call doubles as the tutorial for the doors, lights and cameras. The caller, known to fans as Phone Guy and later named Ralph in the 2024 novel The Week Before, is voiced by the game's creator, Scott Cawthon, and returns with recorded calls in the sequels.
