Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
A chain-smoking engineer's version of a safety announcement, delivered with gallows humour a second before everything might go dark. Nothing else in the control room scenes sounds so human, which is why it stuck. People now say it before any risky switch is flipped, from a system deploy to a roller coaster, and the plural 'butts' is the funniest part.

Spoilers for Jurassic ParkShow the scene
In Jurassic Park (Steven Spielberg, 1993), the island's security has collapsed under Dennis Nedry's sabotage and Hammond decides the only way to wipe his code is to shut the whole system down and reboot it. Chief engineer Ray Arnold protests that they have never done it before and it might not come back at all, then goes ahead and warns the control room to brace with this line. Fan wikis count two uses in the film. Arnold then walks out to the maintenance shed to finish the restart and does not return.
