I turned myself into a pickle, Morty!

— Rick and Morty ‧ 2013

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is Rick's whole philosophy in one act of self-sabotage: he will transform his own body before he sits through a single honest conversation. The line is pure absurdist swagger, a punchline that insists on being a boast, and the pickle became the show's biggest merchandise icon, turning up on shirts, stickers and conventions.

Spoilers for Rick and MortyShow the scene

In "Pickle Rick" (season 3, episode 3, first aired 6 August 2017, written by Jessica Gao), the Smiths are due at a family therapy session. Morty follows Rick's voice into the garage and finds that Rick has turned himself into a pickle, apparently to dodge the appointment. Rick delivers the big reveal himself, then gets irritated when Morty is unimpressed. Later, stranded in the sewers, Rick builds himself a rat-powered exo-rig and bursts out of a toilet roaring his own name.
