Nobody exists on purpose. Nobody belongs anywhere. Everybody's gonna die. Come watch TV.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the show's nihilism turned into a hug. Morty has just told his sister he is a stand-in for a dead boy and delivers the cosmic truth as comfort: none of this was planned, so nobody needs to be a mistake. Fans quote it as shorthand for the series' bleak, oddly warm outlook, usually as the last line of a bad day.

Spoilers for Rick and MortyShow the scene

In "Rixty Minutes" (season 1, episode 8, first aired 17 March 2014), the Smith family are watching alternate-dimension television while Jerry and Beth's marriage hits a rocky patch. Summer is upstairs packing a bag, convinced she is a mistake and the cause of her parents' misery. Morty shows her something out of her window: the graves of the original Rick and Morty of this dimension, whom he and Rick replaced. He sums it up, then invites her to go and watch TV.
