Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
On the surface it is just Rick being gleefully silly. Once Birdperson translates it, it becomes the show's neatest trick: the loudest, funniest thing Rick says is a cry for help that nobody around him hears. Fans quote it as a happy shout and as a knowing wink, and it is the quickest way to say you have watched the show.

Spoilers for Rick and MortyShow the scene
Rick's catchphrase is first used near the end of the season 1 episode "Meeseeks and Destroy", in a joke about the Meeseeks Box, and returns as a running gag in "Raising Gazorpazorp". It plays as a cheerful nonsense cry until "Ricksy Business", where Rick's old friend Birdperson explains that in the language of the Bird People it means "I am in great pain, please help me." Morty points out that Rick is saying it ironically. Rick drops the phrase at the end of that episode and barely uses it again.
