Sheldon Cooper

Knock, knock, knock, Penny.

— The Big Bang Theory

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Three knocks and a name, three times over: it is the series' sound logo for Sheldon's rigid routines, and the audience learned to chant the next knock along with him. The ritual turns a door into a little ceremony, and fans use it to mock anyone who won't simply open up. Penny's weary opening of the door is half the joke.

Spoilers for The Big Bang TheoryShow the scene

Sheldon's knock is a recurring ritual on The Big Bang Theory: three raps on a door, then the occupant's name, repeated three times, most often at Penny's apartment across the hall. The show ties the habit to his childhood, after he walked in on his parents; the knocks give anyone inside time to get ready.
