Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
Sheldon cannot read a joke, so he flags his own; the word is a tiny confession that he is trying to be funny, which is why it lands as both lame and lovable. It escaped the show quickly and became real-world shorthand for 'just kidding'.

Spoilers for The Big Bang TheoryShow the scene
Sheldon Cooper's prank cry is a signal that whatever he just said was a joke. Fan wikis date its first use to "The Monopolar Expedition", the season 2 finale of The Big Bang Theory, first aired on 11 May 2009. Leonard is struggling over an error Sheldon insists is on his whiteboard; Sheldon then admits Leonard had it right all along and that he has fallen for one of his classic pranks. The word recurs through the series, and later episodes give it variants such as "Bada-bazinga".
