Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
Sheldon's solution to a game that ends in too many ties is geek problem-solving at its purest: if the system fails, add rules. Pairing a lizard with Spock turned a playground game into a catchphrase and a staple of fan events. The nod to Star Trek gives the line an extra layer for the fandom the show lives in.

Spoilers for The Big Bang TheoryShow the scene
The expanded game debuts in "The Lizard-Spock Expansion" (season 2, episode 8, November 17, 2008). Sheldon and Raj cannot agree on what to watch on television, so Sheldon proposes settling it with an upgraded rock paper scissors that adds lizard and Spock, and he rattles off the rules. The game itself was created by Sam Kass with Karen Bryla; the show later names Kass as its creator in "The Rothman Disintegration", where Sheldon explains the rules to Penny and Barry Kripke.
