Thanos

I am... inevitable.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Thanos has always spoken of destiny, and here he claims he has beaten even the Avengers' plan to undo the Snap. The film pays him off at once, with Thor's axe, and again in the final battle, where Stark's snap ends Thanos and his army for good. Fans quote it ironically whenever something supposedly unstoppable gets stopped.

Spoilers for Avengers: EndgameShow the scene

In Avengers: Endgame (Anthony and Joe Russo, 2019), twenty-three days after the Snap, the surviving Avengers track Thanos to an uninhabited planet, where he is living quietly on a farm. They demand the Infinity Stones to undo what he did. He answers that he used the Stones to destroy the Stones, that it nearly killed him, and that the work is done and always will be. He ends on the line, and says it again, with a pause, in the final battle as he snaps a gauntlet that no longer holds the Stones. Rhodes wants to search the hut, Nebula says her father is no liar, and Thor decapitates him.
