Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the show's cosmic talent-show audition, and the stakes are the planet. The demand is half terrifying and half X Factor judge, which is exactly how Rick and Morty likes its gods, and the answer, a deliberately silly song, saved the world. Fans shout it at anyone about to perform or to prove themselves, and the wording is usually kept at full volume, as in the episode.

Spoilers for Rick and MortyShow the scene

In "Get Schwifty" (Rick and Morty, season 2 episode 5, first aired 23 August 2015; written by Tom Kauffman, directed by Wes Archer), a planet-sized floating head appears over Earth, its gravity upsetting the planet and causing disasters worldwide. It booms at the world to show what it has got, and Rick works out that it is a Cromulon, a being that wants a live performance of a new song. With Earth's famous musicians killed in an earthquake, Rick and Morty write "Get Schwifty" themselves, and the episode follows the song, the cult that springs up around it and the intergalactic talent contest that decides which planets survive.
