The Merchant

Heh heh heh, thank you!

— Resident Evil 4 • 2005

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

In a game about being hunted, the Merchant is the one stranger who never wants to hurt you, and his cheerful laugh is the sound of safety and a new gun. Players made him an icon because the line rewards every purchase, and later games kept him because fans demanded him. The thank-you is practically the series' mascot noise.

Spoilers for Resident Evil 4Show the scene

The Merchant is the hooded, masked arms dealer who turns up across Resident Evil 4's remote European village, and the first time Leon meets him is beckoning from outside a window of the house in the Valley, then showing off his stock. After that he sets up shop wherever the game gives Leon a breather, marked by a torch with a blue flame, and whenever Leon buys, sells or upgrades a weapon he thanks him with this line. He is voiced by Paul Mercier, and his other call, What're ya buyin', is just as famous.
