The Merchant

What're ya buyin'?

— Resident Evil 4 · 2005

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The line is a shop menu delivered as a character: a gruff, welcoming, faintly sinister question that turns a few seconds of safety in a hostile village into a pleasure. It gave Resident Evil 4 its calm beat between the panics, and the greeting is now shorthand for the relief of reaching a save room with cash in your pocket. Village's Duke quoting it shows the series knows exactly what it made.

Spoilers for Resident Evil 4Show the scene

The Merchant is Resident Evil 4's travelling arms dealer: a figure in a long dark coat and purple bandana, with glowing yellow eyes, a huge backpack and a blue flame marking each of his shops. He first reveals himself to Leon from outside a window in the Valley and then reappears around the island. Interacting with him plays this greeting, and from there you buy, sell and upgrade weapons. Paul Mercier voices him, and the Duke, a trader in Resident Evil Village, calls him an old friend while quoting his trademark line.
