The Divine Comedy

Dante Alighieri

The time was the beginning of the morning; the sun was rising now in fellowship with the same stars that had escorted it when Divine Love first moved those things of beauty.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Dante sets the scene at dawn, the sun climbing alongside the same stars present at creation. Morning becomes something sacred and ancient rather than ordinary. The light arrives with a sense of beginning, as though the world is being started again.
