So Long, and Thanks For All the Fish ‧ 1984
Life is like a grapefruit. It's sort of orangy-yellow and dimpled on the outside, wet and squidgy in the middle. It's got pips inside, too. Oh, and some people have half a one for breakfast.
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
Life, the speaker jokes, resembles a grapefruit: dimpled and orangy-yellow outside, wet and squidgy within, and full of pips. Some people even have half for breakfast. The deadpan comparison undercuts grand metaphors about existence, treating life as odd, messy, faintly absurd and oddly ordinary.
