The Velveteen Rabbit • 1922
Wasn’t I Real before? asked the little Rabbit. “You were Real to the Boy,” the Fairy said, “because he loved you. Now you shall be Real to every one.”
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
Being loved by one person is what made the rabbit Real to them; the reply promises that this reality will now extend to everyone. A tender idea that love confers genuine existence.
