Batman

It’s not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me.

What it means

Our interpretation.

Bruce borrows Rachel's own rebuke and turns it into his creed: the cowl matters less than the choices made under it. Nolan makes it the thesis of the trilogy, and it doubles as a quiet confession. Fans quote it for any hero, or flawed person, judged by their past rather than their deeds.

Spoilers for Batman BeginsShow the scene

In Batman Begins (2005), Gotham is falling apart. The League of Shadows has put a hallucinogen into its water, and Rachel Dawes, now an Assistant District Attorney, is trapped in the Narrows among Arkham's escaped inmates. Batman saves her and a boy from the mob led by Victor Zsasz. She asks him his name, and he answers with her own words from earlier in the film, about what you do rather than who you are. That is how Rachel realises her masked rescuer is Bruce Wayne.
