History, contrary to popular theories, is kings and dates and battles.
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
History is stripped down to rulers, dates and battles. The phrase 'contrary to popular theories' signals a wry dig at fancier explanations. It's a deliberately blunt summary, and the humour comes from how plainly it says so.
