Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
Dug is the film's picture of loyalty, a dog who has no idea he has been talking to a grumpy stranger and loves him anyway. That naive warmth is why the line is quoted by fans, and used for the first meeting with someone new whom you already like. It is also the line that makes the dog a protagonist rather than a talking-animal gag.

Up (2009). In the jungle of Paradise Falls, Russell talks to a dog that has trailed Carl and Kevin the bird into camp, treating him like a normal pet: sit, shake, speak. When he gets to speak, the dog says "Hi, there!" and Carl screams. The dog, Dug, then jumps on a terrified Carl, introduces himself and announces that he loves him. It is the first time a character in the film has talked to Carl as if they had been friends for years, and it comes from a golden retriever wearing a translator collar. Carl reluctantly lets Dug and Kevin join the party, and Dug ends up as Carl's dog.
