Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
Watterson ended the strip without a farewell or a gag, only with two friends heading out into the snow, which is why the last line reads as an invitation rather than a goodbye. Fans still quote it at partings, graduations and new starts, and it lent its title to a later collection of the strip. After the end, the strip was often called the last great newspaper comic.

This is the last line of the final Calvin and Hobbes strip, printed on Sunday 31 December 1995. Cartoonist Bill Watterson had announced the year before that the strip would end at the close of 1995, saying he had achieved what he set out to do in the medium. In the strip Calvin and his stuffed tiger Hobbes sled down a hill after a fresh snowfall, and Calvin says the line.
