Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the ultimate action-movie evacuation order: no explanation, just point and run. Delivered by a man who has just realised he is outmatched, it works as both panic and command, which is why Schwarzenegger has been repeating it, with a wink, in later roles and adverts for decades. Fans shout it at any departure, and it is the first line people reach for when imitating an Austrian action hero.

Spoilers for PredatorShow the scene

Deep in a Central American jungle, Major Dutch Schaefer's rescue team has been hunted one by one by a cloaked alien stalker, and only Dutch and the captured guerrilla Anna are left. Dutch works out that the creature only attacks those it sees as a threat, so he tells Anna to drop her weapon and run for the extraction point, roaring the order at her. He then stays behind to draw the hunter away, and falls from a cliff into a waterfall. The 1987 film was directed by John McTiernan, and the line later became permanently tied to Arnold Schwarzenegger.
