Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The line is the song's whole philosophy, and the episode's: the places and people we leave behind never stay exactly as we left them, even when nothing seems to move. In a miniseries about an immortal vampire watching everyone else age and change, a lullaby from her mother becomes Marceline's way of making peace with loss. Fans quote it for memory, grief and growing up, and it is regularly among the show's most-loved songs.

Spoilers for Adventure TimeShow the scene

The song is a lullaby that debuts in "Everything Stays" (Adventure Time, season 7, 16 November 2015), the second part of the Stakes miniseries. As Marceline faces the rising sun, she flashes back to being a little girl in a trailer, where her mother Elise sings her to nap time and the two sing it together. Marceline sings it again alone, on her ax bass, as the closing montage of the Stakes finale "The Dark Cloud" (19 November 2015). The fan wiki credits it as the first song Rebecca Sugar wrote for the show after leaving to make Steven Universe, with Olivia Olson as Marceline's voice.
