Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
It is a line of no weight at all, which is the point: the one officer who should reassure the Marines announces himself and gets only contempt back. Hudson's reply is quoted far more than the line itself, and together they sum up Gorman's arc, a commander who looks the part and is out of his depth the moment the shooting starts.

Spoilers for AliensShow the scene
At Hadley's Hope on LV-426, Lieutenant Gorman, a first-time field commander whom the Marines have already mocked on the Sulaco, stays with the APC while the squads go into the colony's main building. Over the radio he announces that he is coming in. Among the troops, Hudson answers with sarcasm about feeling safer, and Vasquez adds a muttered insult in Spanish. Hours later the mission has collapsed, and Gorman is knocked unconscious in the APC.
