In the dark of a crashing spaceship, a tree creature's branches weave a glowing wooden sphere around tiny figures, glowing seeds floating like fireflies.

Groot

I am Groot.

— Guardians of the Galaxy  ·  2014

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Three words, endless meanings: the joke of Groot is that the same line carries rage, tenderness, a shrug or a goodbye, and only Rocket (and by extension the audience) can tell which. At the film's end it is its most moving, when Groot shields his friends and the sentence turns from a gag into a farewell. Fans use it as a catch-all reply to anything.

Spoilers for Guardians of the GalaxyShow the scene

In James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Groot is the tree-like partner of the raccoon Rocket, and his only words are 'I am Groot', a limitation that goes back to his comic-book debut in Tales to Astonish #13 (1960). Rocket, who understands him, translates. In the Collector's museum, Groot answers the collector's question, and then his offer to buy his carcass, with the same three words, and Rocket explains the meaning with a joke about turning him into a chair. Vin Diesel voiced him, and Gunn has said he based Groot on his dog.
