How appropriate, you fight like a cow!
— The Secret of Monkey Island • 1990
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
The joke is that duelling is a verbal contest where being clever matters more than being strong, and the dairy-farmer reply is the textbook win. The line made Monkey Island the game people quote the way others quote films, and its insult fighting is still one of the most-referenced gags in adventure games. Fans use it to mean winning an argument with style.

Spoilers for The Secret of Monkey IslandShow the scene
In Lucasfilm Games' The Secret of Monkey Island (1990), the pirates of Mêlée Island settle duels with insults, not blades. Guybrush Threepwood learns that a fight is won by the right comeback, not by swordplay. Captain Smirk teaches him his first pair on Mêlée Island, including the famous dairy-farmer insult. When a pirate says you fight like a dairy farmer, this is the reply that cancels it. Guybrush must pick up more exchanges from the pirates he meets before he can face the Sword Master.
