Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is a reflex wisecrack: when every choice is wrong, a LucasArts hero lies nonsensically. Players tie it to Stan because of his jackets, but the joke is Guybrush's cover story, lifted from an Indy game from the same studio. It stands for the studio's habit of winking at its own back catalogue, and for the pleasure of trying every dialogue option just to see what happens.

This is a dialogue option in The Secret of Monkey Island (1990), not a line Stan speaks. Guybrush Threepwood can pick it as a nonsense answer when he is stuck, for example to the Fettucini Brothers or to the Sword Master Carla, where it reveals her size. It is an in-joke borrowed from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, where Indy can say the same thing to Nazi soldiers at Castle Brunwald, and it returns in later Monkey Island games such as The Curse of Monkey Island. Stan, the used-ship salesman in the loud patterned jacket, is a separate character.
